What happened

On 8 June 2026 Uber opened an interest list for UK customers wanting to ride in autonomous vehicles, and showed off the car that will carry them: a black, Uber-branded Ford Mustang Mach-E running the self-driving system built by Wayve, the UK autonomy company. Riders who join the list can raise their odds of being matched with an autonomous vehicle through their account settings; anyone matched with one retains the option to decline and request a human driver instead.

The launch follows the Department for Transport's decision in May 2026 to open applications for its automated passenger services pilot scheme, with fuller regulations to be developed using evidence from the pilots. Uber's is not the only operation on London roads.

Waymo, Alphabet's autonomous vehicle unit, began testing roughly 100 Jaguar I-PACE vehicles across a 100-square-mile area of London in April 2026, with human safety operators aboard. Wayve's robotaxis will likewise run with a safety operator initially, before any transition to driverless service.

The technology

The vehicle pairing is straightforward: Ford supplies the platform, Wayve supplies the autonomy stack, and Uber supplies the demand, the app and the rider experience. The commercial validation behind Wayve is substantial: in February 2026 the company raised $1.2bn, with the round potentially reaching $1.5bn including a conditional $300m from Uber that is contingent on the London robotaxi deployment going ahead. Nvidia, Uber and three carmakers are among the investors.

Uber has designed the rider-facing side of the vehicle, including interactive touchscreens supporting 64 languages — a detail that says something about the intended market in a city as international as London.

The competitive dynamics are already sharp. Uber and Waymo are partners in Austin and Atlanta in the United States, but the relationship shows signs of strain; Uber's chief technology officer, Praveen Neppalli, has publicly criticised Waymo vehicles' behaviour on social media. In London the two will be direct rivals.

Why it matters for UK & Ireland

For UK transport policy, this is the moment the regulatory framework meets commercial reality. The DfT's pilot scheme is the mechanism through which paid autonomous passenger services will be permitted before full regulations arrive, and the quality of evidence the pilots generate will shape those regulations. Two well-funded operators running at scale in the capital is a far better test than one.

There is also an industrial stake. Wayve is a UK company, and the London deployment, backed by conditional Uber capital that only flows if it happens, is effectively a home-market proving ground for a British autonomy exporter. Success in London would be Wayve's calling card for the European and Asian markets its carmaker investors serve.

For infrastructure owners, the second-order questions are practical: kerbside management for pick-up and drop-off, depot and charging capacity for electric robotaxi fleets, and how local authorities handle two operators' vehicles learning the same streets at once. Dublin and other UK cities will be watching how Transport for London and the boroughs manage it before framing their own positions.

What to watch

The first is timing: when paid, public rides actually begin, and how long safety operators remain in the driving seat — the step from supervised testing to driverless carriage is the one that matters legally and commercially. The second is the DfT pilot approvals themselves: which operators are admitted, on what conditions, and what data they must share.

The third is Waymo's response; its London testing began before Uber's announcement, and the pace at which it moves from testing to service will determine whether London gets a genuine head-to-head. Note that claims that London would be the first European city with competing robotaxi operators, while plausible, rest on how quickly both services reach paying passengers.
