Future Technologies

79 technologies, readiness-mapped. 24 of them you can specify today.

UK and Ireland infrastructure technology readiness, with delivery windows — what you can actually use, and when.

Seventy-nine technologies across seventeen sectors, each carried at its technology readiness level with a route to market and the institutions behind it. We read the operators, the catapults and the manufacturers so that you do not have to. Scroll down to see what is ready.

The problem

79 technologies. 17 are still in the laboratory.

Telling one from the other is the difference between a specification and a gamble.

The root cause

What separates them? Readiness level — 24 sit at TRL 8–9, 38 at TRL 6–7, and 17 at TRL 3–5.

A press release and a live deployment read exactly the same until someone checks.

The turn

Every technology carried with its readiness level, its route to market and its institutions.

Not a trend list. A specification aid.

Proof

32 named institutions across 17 sectors.

Every technology tied to the organisations actually building it.

What you get

Check a technology’s readiness level before you write it into a specification.

See which 24 technologies are commercially deployable in the UK and Ireland right now.

Read the route to market on anything still emerging, and what has to happen first.

Find the institutions and companies behind a technology before you approach them.

The scale

What TRL Means

Technology Readiness Level is the 1–9 maturity scale used across UK research and procurement. The only two questions it answers: how proven is this, and how far from routine use?

Research · TRL 1–2
Lab · TRL 3–4
Bridge to site · TRL 5–7
Commercial · TRL 8–9

TRL 3–7 is the “valley of death” — the bridge where technologies either jump from lab to live site or quietly die. It is exactly where the UK & Ireland’s innovation centres (GEIC, Royce, the Catapults, UKBIC and peers) do their work, see where, below.

The timeline

Every Technology’s Route to Market

Each line is one technology: a dot at its readiness level today, running up-and-right to its evidenced arrival at market (TRL 9). Steep and short = usable soon. Long and shallow = further out. Hover to identify a route; click it for the full breakdown.
