In June 2026 Amphos, an independent connections provider, commissioned Scotland's first megawatt-scale charging hub for battery-electric heavy goods vehicles at Coatbridge, North Lanarkshire. The site serves the logistics firm Russell Group and was part-funded by Innovate UK, with charging hardware supplied by Vestel Mobility.
The installation comprises two 720kW double-port CCS chargers and one 1.2MW double-port charger built to the Megawatt Charging System (MCS) standard. The site currently draws on a 1.4MW grid connection, with capacity to expand to 3.75MW as the fleet grows. Amphos designed and installed the infrastructure.
The trucks it serves are working vehicles, not demonstrators. Russell Group runs three MAN eTGX 4x2 electric tractor units on Tesco logistics services between Coatbridge and Daventry, integrating with electric rail freight. The trucks manage a range of over 430km per charge at a full 42-tonne load.
The significance lies in the MCS unit. CCS, the standard connector for electric cars and most current electric trucks, tops out well below what a heavy truck on tight schedules needs. The Megawatt Charging System is the dedicated heavy-vehicle standard designed to push charging power into the megawatt range, and Coatbridge is one of its earliest real-world UK deployments.
The numbers explain why operators care. On the site's 720kW CCS chargers, a full charge takes roughly 40 minutes. Once Russell Group's trucks are retrofitted with MCS inlets — planned for July 2026, at which point the company says they will be the first in the UK so equipped.
Then the 1.2MW charger is expected to cut that to around 20 minutes. Stephen Madden, Russell Group's head of engineering, put the operational logic simply: "Megawatt charging allows us to bring a heavy goods vehicle in, charge it during a driver's break, and send it straight back out fully charged."
That sentence contains the whole economics of electric haulage. A charge completed within a driver's break means electrification imposes no schedule penalty; a charge that outlasts the break means idle trucks and idle drivers. MCS is the difference between the two.
The staged grid connection is also worth noting. Rather than paying up front for a 3.75MW connection, the site starts at 1.4MW with a designed expansion path — a pattern that spreads connection costs across fleet growth and one that other depot operators will likely copy.
Electric HGVs have been the hard case for road freight decarbonisation, and charging has been the binding constraint: without megawatt-class public and depot charging on trunk routes, battery-electric artics are confined to short, predictable duty cycles. Coatbridge demonstrates the full stack working commercially in Scotland — grid connection, MCS hardware, a fleet operator with real contracts and a major retail customer in Tesco.
The Coatbridge–Daventry corridor is itself instructive. It is a long trunk haul run in combination with electric rail freight, showing electric trucks slotting into a multimodal chain rather than replacing it. For Scotland, where haulage distances to English distribution hubs have been cited as a barrier to fleet electrification, a megawatt hub in the central belt changes the calculation.
For the island of Ireland, where freight electrification faces similar range-and-charging arithmetic, the project is a nearby template: a privately delivered hub, publicly part-funded through an innovation programme, anchored by a single committed fleet operator with capacity to expand.
The July 2026 MCS retrofit is the near-term test: whether the ~20-minute charge is achieved in daily operation, and how the 1.2MW unit performs under repeated use. Beyond that, watch whether the 1.4MW connection is expanded towards its 3.75MW ceiling as Russell Group adds electric tractors; whether Vestel's MCS hardware appears at further UK sites; and whether Innovate UK-style part-funding gives way to fully commercial hub investment. The claim that a megawatt hub can pay its way on one fleet's duty cycle is now being tested in public.
