Who they are

Unitree Robotics was founded in 2016 in Hangzhou by Wang Xingxing and has become the volume manufacturer of legged robots — quadrupeds first, humanoids more recently. It shipped more than 5,500 humanoid robots in 2025, a figure reported by Chinese state media as the highest of any maker globally.

The company is mid-flotation: its Shanghai STAR Market listing was approved in a record 104 days, with subscriptions opening on 10 August 2026 for 40.45 million shares, about 10 per cent of enlarged capital; Wang and related parties will retain roughly 65 per cent of voting rights. First-half 2026 revenue is forecast at 1.05bn–1.13bn yuan (about $155m–166m), up 36–45 per cent year on year. Its robot dogs, displayed alongside Boston Dynamics', were among the draws at the MACHINA Summit in Paris in July 2026.

The technology

Unitree's contribution to the field is less a capability than a price. When it unveiled the G1 humanoid at the ICRA robotics conference in May 2024, the base price was $16,000 — against $90,000 for its own H1 the year before, and six-figure sums elsewhere in the market: an order-of-magnitude collapse. The G1 is a 1.27-metre, 47kg machine with around two hours of battery life, lidar and depth cameras, and optional force-controlled three-fingered hands.

Unitree itself positions it as a research platform for university laboratories and embodied-AI development rather than a working machine, and attributes the cost to vertical integration, motors and reducers designed in-house, and, in the company's own telling, fewer wires, fewer chips, fewer screws. What is proven is manufacturing scale and dynamic mobility at an unprecedented price point. What is not proven is useful autonomous work: the shipment figures are sales of development hardware, not of deployed labour.

Why it matters for UK & Ireland

Two truths have to be held together. First, the price collapse made Unitree hardware the economic default for legged-robotics research and piloting: at $16,000, a humanoid costs less than most single pieces of laboratory equipment, and any UK or Irish group prototyping inspection or monitoring robots for energy, water or rail assets faces a hardware market in which the affordable tier is dominated by this one supplier. Second, the security record is poor. In September 2025 researchers published UniPwn, a wormable Bluetooth exploit granting root access across the Go2, B2, G1 and H1 lines via hardcoded keys, after months of unanswered disclosure attempts; separate analysis identified undisclosed telemetry streaming to servers in China.

Unitree said in late September 2025 that most fixes were complete. On 28 July 2026 the US FCC added advanced robotic devices to its national-security Covered List, closing new American authorisations for a category dominated by Chinese manufacturers — six days after Unitree's commercial launch in Europe. For UK critical-infrastructure operators, a networked platform carrying cameras and lidar from a Chinese vendor is therefore a security question before it is an engineering one. Neither side cancels the other: the research pipeline runs on Unitree hardware even as the deployment pipeline runs into vetting.

What to watch

The flotation will show how much capital sits behind the price advantage, and the prospectus disclosures deserve reading. On security, the open questions are concrete: whether independent researchers verify the claimed fixes, whether the European commercial operation comes with documented, auditable data governance, and whether UK authorities issue guidance mirroring the American restriction, or stay silent and leave each operator to judge.

The thesis would firm up if a credible non-Chinese platform reached a comparable price, giving buyers a choice; it would weaken if verified patches and transparent telemetry made the security gap closable. For now the UK connection is unresolved in both directions — ubiquitous in the laboratory, unbankable in the substation, and this profile watches for whichever side moves first.
