Persona AI is a Houston-based startup building rugged humanoid robots for one unglamorous, well-chosen job: welding in shipyards. Its founding team is unusually credentialed for a company this young. The stated timeline is a completed prototype by the end of 2026, with field testing and commercial deployment from 2027. It should be said plainly: no robot is welding ships commercially today. What exists is a prototype, a staged industrial programme with dates attached, and partners with every incentive to hold it to them.
The UK connection is prospective, there is no Persona AI engagement with any UK or Irish yard on record, but the demand-side case writes itself. The signals are unusually datable. First, does the prototype complete by the end of 2026, and do 2027 field tests begin in an HD Hyundai yard on schedule? Slippage in Korea pushes everything else out. Second, weld quality: the involvement of ABS matters, because class-society acceptance of robot-laid welds is the gate between demonstration and production use, in naval work above all.
Third, the UK link itself: any approach to or from BAE Systems or Babcock, or inclusion of robotic welding in UK shipbuilding skills planning, would be the first hard evidence that the mapping is becoming a relationship. Until then this remains a company being watched for a UK connection rather than one with evidenced UK relevance — the thesis would be confirmed by a Korean production deployment followed by British interest, and undermined if the verification phase ends quietly or the welding proves to need more human finishing than the economics can bear.
