Who they are

FieldAI is a robot software company headquartered in Irvine, California, founded and led by Ali Agha. It does not build robots; it builds what it calls Field Foundation Models — AI systems that let other people's robots operate autonomously in messy, unmapped industrial environments.

In August 2025 it announced $405m raised across two oversubscribed rounds at a $2bn valuation, with a backer list that reads like a who's-who of patient technology capital: Bezos Expeditions, Gates Frontier, Intel Capital, Nvidia's NVentures and Samsung. Its stated plan at the time was to double headcount and push product development in locomotion and manipulation.

The technology

The pitch is autonomy for places that defeat conventional robot navigation: construction sites, utility plants and rigs that change daily, lack GPS indoors, and cannot be exhaustively pre-mapped. The company says its models are "risk-aware" by design, built from the ground up to quantify uncertainty rather than retrofitted with safety checks, ingest multimodal input from cameras, lidar and text, run on the robot at the edge, and operate without maps, GPS or pre-programmed paths, building contextual understanding of a site rather than requiring pre-training for every scenario.

Those architectural claims are the company's own. What is independently reported is the footprint: deployments across hundreds of industrial environments in the United States, Japan and Europe, including active construction sites, with proof-of-concept work at DPR Construction. Current deployed work is monitoring and modelling — 360-degree site imagery, point clouds, progress capture, with physical work the stated direction of travel rather than the present reality.

Why it matters for UK & Ireland

When our tracking data was compiled, FieldAI had no UK deployment; that has now changed. On 17 July 2026, McLaren Construction, a UK contractor, announced a partnership with FieldAI to deploy autonomous quadruped robots on its UK sites — FieldAI's entry into the UK market. The initial scope is site intelligence: 360-degree imagery, point-cloud generation, progress verification, model-to-site deviation analysis, safety compliance patrols and quality assurance, folded into a digital transformation strategy McLaren began in 2022.

Both sides describe an expanding brief; FieldAI's sales lead framed it as starting with monitoring missions and extending "across the full spectrum of physical work". The broader mapping stands behind that single deal: UK construction monitoring and energy-asset inspection are exactly the unstructured, GPS-denied settings the technology targets, and a software-only model means UK deployment requires a customer and a robot fleet, not a factory.

What to watch

The McLaren partnership converts this company's UK relevance from prospect to test case, and the test is measurable. Watch for named sites, the number of robots actually walking them, and whether the deployment survives contact with British site conditions and the reporting rhythms of UK contractors — an announced partnership is not yet an at-scale deployment, and construction technology partnerships have a history of quiet attrition after the press release.

The second signal is scope: if the work expands beyond scanning and patrols towards any physical task, the company's larger claims start to be earned; if it stays a mobile survey instrument, the $2bn valuation rests on markets it has not yet demonstrated. Third, the energy-inspection half of the thesis remains entirely prospective in these islands, no UK or Irish utility, network operator or energy major is on record as a customer. This company entered our tracking as one to watch for a UK connection; the connection has now materialised on paper, and the coming construction seasons will show whether it materialises in steel and mud.
