ACUA Ocean and Teledyne FLIR Defense, UK Defence Innovation funding
In July 2026, ACUA Ocean and Teledyne FLIR Defense completed a two-day demonstration in which ACUA's Pioneer uncrewed surface vessel launched, flew and recovered a tethered Teledyne FLIR SkyRanger R70 drone. The trial, funded by UK Defence Innovation (UKDI), the Ministry of Defence body with an annual budget of more than £400m, was announced by the companies on 22 July and put an aircraft into the air from a vessel with no one aboard, with the drone drawing continuous power through its tether.
The demonstration builds on sea trials in January 2026, in which the Pioneer operated in 4.25-metre waves and, according to the company, recorded 60 per cent less roll, with peak roll rates four times lower, than comparable monohulls. ACUA Ocean describes the Pioneer as the UK's first Lloyd's Register-certified remotely operated uncrewed vessel; it has previously carried out intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) and anti-submarine warfare work for the Royal Navy.
The pairing addresses the central weakness of small drones at sea: endurance. Free-flying, a small drone's time aloft is set by its battery. Here, a managed tether supplies continuous power and carries data between vessel and aircraft, removing the battery limit and allowing the drone to stay aloft as a persistent elevated sensor mast, synchronised with the vessel's position.
Launch and recovery use Teledyne FLIR's SkyCarrier, a protected container with an articulating pad that lets the aircraft deploy and land autonomously. The SkyRanger R70 carries a stabilised electro-optical and infrared sensor package, multiple embedded NVIDIA processors for onboard object detection and classification, and four computer-vision cameras supporting autonomous operation. Teledyne FLIR pitches it as delivering "Group 2" ISR performance from a smaller "Group 1" class of airframe.
"Integrating the SkyRanger R70 with the Pioneer creates something genuinely new: a persistent, deployable multi-domain ISR capability that the Royal Navy can put to sea today," said Neil Tinmouth, ACUA Ocean's chief executive. Richard Cunha, principal product director for UAS at Teledyne FLIR Defense, pointed to the pairing of the drone with "the Pioneer Mk2's exceptional sea-keeping capability and endurance".
The stated applications run beyond defence. Alongside anti-submarine warfare, mine countermeasures and intelligence gathering, both companies cite protection of critical maritime infrastructure — monitoring of wind farms, subsea cables and pipelines.
The UK and Ireland depend heavily on seabed infrastructure: interconnectors, gas pipelines, telecoms cables and a fast-growing offshore wind fleet in the North Sea, Irish Sea and Celtic Sea. Patrolling it with crewed vessels and helicopters is expensive and episodic.
An uncrewed vessel that can hold station for extended periods with a permanently airborne camera offers, in principle, continuous wide-area surveillance at a fraction of the crewed cost — and without putting people offshore in poor weather. The January trials in 4.25-metre seas matter because that is the weather in which infrastructure surveillance is hardest and, arguably, most needed.
This remains a demonstration, not a programme of record. The companies acknowledge that procurement decisions, further testing and customer commitments are still pending, and the published material does not state where the July trial took place or the drone's time aloft, so endurance in operational conditions is not yet independently evidenced.
Watch for three signals: a follow-on MoD or Royal Navy contract moving the combination from trial to tasking; a first commercial deployment with an offshore wind or cable operator; and regulatory progress, since routine uncrewed-vessel-plus-drone operations in shared waters will test both maritime and aviation rules. UKDI funding got the concept to sea; a paying customer is the next threshold.
